Space Tourism: SpaceX to fly two people around the moon next year

Elon Musk, the CEO of SpaceX has announced that it is sending two tourists around the moon in 2018, both tourists have paid a substantial amount of money for the trip.

He said: “This presents an opportunity for humans to return to deep space for the first time in 45 years. Like Apollo astronauts before them, these individuals will travel into space carrying the hopes and dreams of all humankind, driven by the universal human spirit of exploration.”

The identity of the tourists has not been disclosed, they will make their trip on an unmanned spaceship on its first test flight. Elon Musk also said that NASA provided help and assistance to make this project possible.

He further said: “We expect to conduct health and fitness tests, as well as begin initial training later this year.”

The first test flight would be unmanned and the second flight will be with crew in the later months of 2018. Elon Musk said that the participants know about the risks involved in such missions and “are entering this with their eyes open”.

He said: “They’re certainly not naive, and we’ll do everything we can to minimise that risk, but it’s not zero.”
